About the Conference:

The 2026 National Association of Medical Spanish (NAMS) Annual Conference brings together educators, clinicians, researchers, students, and institutional leaders committed to advancing language-concordant care and ethical multilingual practice in healthcare.

This year’s theme, “Más allá de las palabras: Language Advocacy in Healthcare,” emphasizes that when it comes to effective health communication, words are only the tip of the iceberg.. The conference centers practical implementation, institutional accountability, and sustainable educational innovation.

Theme: Más allá de las palabras: Language Advocacy in Health Care

Objectives:

  • Explain the role of language-appropriate care in improving health care safety, quality, and population health.
  • Evaluate institutional policies and systems that support ethical, sustainable language-concordant and interpreter-mediated care.
  • Design and advance evidence-based medical Spanish education, research, and innovation in health professions training.

Conference Tracks:

ACCESS focuses on ensuring equitable access to care in patients’ preferred language. This track highlights systems-level solutions, clinical workflows, interpreter collaboration, institutional policies, documentation standards, and research examining the impact of language on patient safety and outcomes.

ADVOCACY centers on advancing language justice and institutional accountability. Submissions in this track may explore policy reform, credentialing and recognition of multilingual clinicians, ethical frameworks, community partnerships, leadership development, and strategies that promote sustainable multilingual practice within healthcare systems.

ACTION emphasizes implementation and measurable change in education and clinical environments. This track includes medical Spanish curriculum design and evaluation, language assessment models, simulation and standardized patient case development, faculty development, culturally sustaining care practices, and research in health professions training.
